Spencer was awarded a small grant from the American Ornithological Society to support the work on malaria parasites. Specifically, the Werner and Hildegard Hesse Research Award- Supports graduate student research (Masters or Doctorate), with preference given to those studying birds in the wild. Congrats!

POSTPONED: Promotora Workshop March 30
Excited to host a Chagas workshop with the goal of educating community health workers in the Rio Grande Valley. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this workshop will be postponed until further notice.
Wetlabs
Hamer Lab members will be demonstrating wildlife trapping, chemical immobilization, and blood sampling techniques on wild rodents, mesomammals, and birds this weekend. In attendance will be zeveral veterinary students from many different schools, all participating in the Zoo, Exotics, and Wildlife ‘Wetlabs’ event. Fingers crossed for great captures!

Ethyl Ashworth-Tsutsui Award to Dr. Meyers!
Congrats Dr. Alyssa Meyers on being selected for the Ethyl Ashworth-Tsutsui Award for Mentoring, given to a postdoctoral associate. The award is organized by Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and was presented at the 2020 Ethel Ashworth-Tsutsui Memorial Lecture and Awards Ceremony. The award consisted of a $500 monetary award, certificate and plaque. The award was received by Lisa Auckland, as Alyssa couldn’t attend in person. Spencer Awarded for Bird Research
Spencer takes home the second place platform presentation award at the 2020 CVM Trainee Research Symposium! His presentation was called ‘Tracking Malaria Parasite Infection and Ectoparasite Infestation in Migratory Birds Arriving to Coastal Texas Over a 6-Year Period’. Congrats!
Working Dogs
Alyssa’s work with the border patrol dogs, in collaboration with cardiologist Dr. Saunders and the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases, was featured in the CVM Today (pages 26-29) and the TAMU Research Bulletin!
