Harry Brightman wins summer research award

Harry participated in the 13-week Veterinary Medical Scientist Research Training Program (VMSRTP), which provides stipends to first- and second-year veterinary students for a summer research experience. Harry immersed into research projects with the Schubot Center for Avian Health, and learned DNA extraction and PCR methods to detect avian malaria parasites in wild bird samples. He used samples collected in prior years by PhD student Meredith Anderson DVM; she had shown widespread exposure of these birds to neonicotinoids. HIs presentation was: Does immunosuppression of wild birds by neonicotinoid pesticide exposure alter pathogen infection prevalence?  The case of Texas birds and malaria parasites

He was awarded an Outstanding Clinical Research Presentation Award at the on-campus research symposium, before heading the Minnesota to present his work with summer scholars from across the country.
