Girl Scouts have ‘Sweet’ Visit with VET
Each year during Girl Scout cookie season, the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council offers a “virtual cookie share,” through which cookies are donated to the council’s pre-determined choice. Scouts also collect donations in person and may choose to donate to a “brick and mortar” organization.
This past cookie season our council designated the virtual “Cookies4Heroes” donations to first responders, military, and organizations that provided assistance during Hurricane Harvey.
Because scouts in Troop 154001, a multi-level troop from Needville within the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, collected 30 or more boxes in virtual donations, they earned the honor of nominating organizations to which they would donate those cookies. The group nominated the Needville Police & Volunteer Fire Department, Relentless Defender, and the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team.
On Aug. 21, the troop traveled from Fort Bend County to College Station to deliver 13.5 cases of Girl Scout Cookies donated by their community as a “thank you” for coming to their aid. Fort Bend County was among the areas the VET served during Hurricane Harvey, spending nearly two weeks at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg.
During their visit, they met with members of the VET, who talked with the troop about what the team does, the animals the team has treated in the past, and the Hurricane Harvey response.
“Our girls really enjoyed visiting the college and learning more about VET,” said troop cookie manager Cheryn Preiss. “Cookies4Heroes has been a really great program for our girls to revisit just a few of the organizations that answer the call during disaster.”
