Biography

"My veterinary career began with specialized training in surgery. I practiced soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurologic surgery for nearly 20 years in the private practice and university settings. I developed an interest in physical rehabilitation, which led me to pursue more training in this field. Currently, my focus is on the clinical practice of soft tissue surgery in an academic setting, where I facilitate learning for veterinary students, interns and residents. I provide surgical services for clients, while also serving to advance the careers of young veterinarians."

  • Program director. ACVS program director for TAMU small animal surgery residents 2010- 2015
  • Established TAMU CVM as an externship site for CRI and Tennessee students studying canine rehabilitation (2010-2013).

I developed a new elective, VSCS 948 “Physical Rehabilitation” in 2010, for which 3 sections were offered to the second- and third-year veterinary students each year. Each section was limited to 16 students and involved 8 hours of lectures and 8 hours of laboratories. I created all of the lectures and laboratories, although sometimes had colleagues present some lectures and assist with the laboratories. I also integrated some online coursework, which I developed for Veritas. This course was last taught in 2018 and was discontinued with the development of the new veterinary curriculum at TAMU.  At the request of the Associate Dean for Professional Programs at the TAMU CVM, I created a new elective course for the second-year veterinary students. This is a full semester classroom-taught course, which began in the fall of 2018.

Since 2009, I have instructed in the two surgical courses for the second and third-year veterinary students. Within our new curriculum in 2019, I have been heavily involved (60 hours) in the laboratory instruction of the Principles of Surgery course. This an introductory surgical laboratory that instructs all second-year veterinary students in the basic principles and practices of surgery. During this courses, the students work in groups of 3-4 during the laboratories, and the instructors circulate to guide the students as they perform the procedures.

Beginning in 2019, I also was a co-instructor for two other large courses. I was co-instructor for the physical rehabilitation portion fo the Professional and Clinical Skills course (VSCS 926). In cooperation with two colleagues, we created a module related to wounds in the large Organ Dysfunction course (VTPB 932).

Clinical teaching (soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology) occurs in two-week blocks of time throughout the year and has an enrollment of 3 to 6 senior veterinary students per session. During an average of 30 weeks per year, I am involved full-time (>40 hrs/wk) with these courses. The daily schedule includes an hour of topic or case discussion twice daily. The students are instructed and supervised during the history-taking and physical examination of clinical cases. Diagnostic procedures and treatments are performed and discussed during both one-on-one and small group discussions. The students assist with surgery and are supervised with regard to postoperative care and client communication.

Mentoring

Faculty

I am a trained observer in the Peer Review of Teaching program in the TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences since 2018 and have provided individualized feedback for two colleagues.

Surgery Residents

I was Program Director for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons residency program for small animal surgery at TAMU July 2010 – July 2015. I have trained 16 small animal surgery residents in the clinics since 2009.

Surgical and Rotating Interns

Guide small animal interns by discussion of clinical case management, surgical techniques, and rounds topics. I have regular interaction with eight to ten interns each year, and have served as a direct mentor for several rotating interns. I also work closely with the surgical interns each year.

Veterinarians in Seeking Experiences in Physical Rehabilitation

I supervised the clinical practice of five veterinarians who visited the TAMU veterinary rehabilitation service in order to gain knowledge and skills in this field.

Veterinary Students

I have mentored pre-veterinary students, TAMU veterinary students, foreign veterinary students and several veterinary student clubs.
