BIOGRAPHY

My professional interest in veterinary education stems from the profound positive influence and impact that can occur in the teacher-student relationship. My vision for veterinary education is the creation of a safe physical and intellectual space where students are engaged in active learning with the goal of matriculating confident, practice ready veterinarians that are in high demand for their skills. I am excited by the ever-evolving landscape of veterinary medical education. As an educator, pursuing formal and informal feedback and researching ways to improve student engagement in the classroom and clinic is important to my continued growth.


Active learning in the classroom keeps me motivated to teach well and I continually look for ways to encourage student engagement. I have found that even simple activities, like coloring anatomical drawings to reinforce surgical anatomy, can be powerful learning tools when planned and executed properly. Even though I enjoy these low-fidelity classroom and laboratory activities, I am driven to improve learning by exploring and employing contemporary teaching methods and tools. Two examples are my use of Team Based Learning and Virtual Reality.


My teaching obligations span all four years of the professional veterinary curriculum with wide ranging responsibilities including didactic teaching, facilitated classroom discussions of critical thinking scenarios, skills laboratories, and clinical instruction in required, elective, and clinical courses. I have served as instructor-in-charge of three courses [VMID 944 – Integrated Animal Care III, VLCS 932 – Advanced Ruminant Herd Health & Production (legacy curriculum course), and VLCS 988 – Practical Large Animal Medicine for the Rural Practitioner] and have teaching responsibility in an additional 7 courses in the spring semester and 8 courses in the fall semester which totalled of 755 contact hours in the 2019-2020 academic year. I also share responsibility for instructing and mentoring 3 rotating large animal interns, 3 ACVS large animal surgery residents, and 4 ACVIM large animal medicine residents on the clinic floor through provision of clinical service and after-hours emergency coverage. Additionally, I am the resident advisor of record for our 2nd year surgery resident.
