Vet Camp Summer 2024 at the Schubot Aviary

Once again, the Schubot Center hosted its traditional “avian summer camp” for high school students. For the Schubot Center, participating in vet camps is one exciting way to make a meaningful impact within the Texas A&M University community and in our local community.

This one-day camp is led by avian researchers from the Schubot Center who share their expertise in fields such as wild bird trapping and avian parasitology. Participants also have the chance to learn about improving the well-being of caged birds and participate in avian enrichment building.

Vet Camp Summer 2024, hosted by Dr. Leslie Easterwood and Dr. Dee Ellis, brought a group of enthusiastic students to the Aviary this past month. The camp was held over two sessions, with the first group visiting on June 11 and the second on June 14.

During the camp, Dr. Caitlin Mencio provided research information, Dr. Amanda Beckman described fieldwork and mist netting, and Dr. Ken Turner set up microscopes for an in-depth look into the world of avian lice, mites, and other parasites. Finally, while the students assembled avian enrichment, the vet campers had the opportunity to interact with veterinary student Kevin Rekoff, who discussed veterinary medicine and shared his experiences as a rising second-year student.

The Vet Camp Summer 2024 was a fantastic opportunity for participants to gain hands-on experience and knowledge about avian health and welfare. We look forward to continuing to inspire and educate future veterinarians through these engaging and informative camps.
