About VMBS Impact Categories
- The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) provides leading-edge, compassionate care for animals while ensuring that students receive the highest standard of veterinary medical education. The VMTH was the first teaching hospital to receive the prestigious American Animal Hospital Association Referral Practice Accreditation, is certified as a Level II facility by the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society, and has been awarded the American Association of Feline Practitioners Cat-Friendly Practice—Gold Level designation. Visit the VMTH website.
- The VMBS partners with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to provide veterinary care to the more than 275,000 cattle, chickens, pigs, horses, and dogs that reside at 52 prison units across the state. In one of the longest-standing interagency agreements between state agencies, Texas A&M’s fourth-year veterinary students participating on the TDCJ clinical rotation provide medical care to these animals, including annual exams, dental cleanings, and surgeries, under the supervision of VMBS faculty members. Read more about the TDCJ rotation.
- The first and most sophisticated team of its kind in the U.S., the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team (VET) serves the state of Texas through disaster response, education, and outreach. During disasters, the team provides medical support to the Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Task Force 2 working dogs and deploys at the request of the State of Texas or county jurisdictions to provide veterinary care to resident animals. As part of the VET’s clinical rotation, fourth-year veterinary students work with emergency managers across the state to develop county-level preparedness plans for animals. The team and its clinical rotation also participate in the state’s annual readiness exercise, Operation Border Health, to provide preventative care to animals in South Texas. Visit the VET website.
- There are two externship programs for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students at the VMBS:
- DVM students in their fourth-year are required to complete a four-week clinical externship rotation, overseen by a practicing veterinarian who provides instruction, mentorship, and evaluation of the students visiting their practices. The goal of the rotation is to familiarize the extern with the practice of veterinary medicine in the private sector and provide valuable exposure to primary care medical and surgical services, client communications, and practice management. Learn more about fourth-year veterinary clinical externships.
- The Rural Veterinary Practice Preclinical Externship was developed in 2024 as part of the college’s commitment to graduating veterinarians prepared to serve communities of all sizes. The program allows first- and second-year DVM students to complete a two-week summer externship in a small-town Texas veterinary clinic while being introduced to small-town culture. Learn more about the Rural Veterinary Practice Preclinical Externship program.
- VMBS former students are leaders of character who take action, create lasting impact, and work to build a brighter, safer world for the people of Texas, the nation, and beyond. Throughout its history, the college has offered several bachelor’s (BS), master’s (MS), and doctoral (PhD) degrees, in addition to the DVM. Visit websites for the current degree programs at the VMBS:
