State of the College
I recently had the pleasure of presenting the State of the College at the CVM’s College Hour, where I shared the exciting events that are taking place at this great college. We’ve had many accomplishments recently, and this is a trend I expect to continue as we begin our centennial year.
Because of your hard work and support, the CVM was ranked sixth in the world and third in the nation among veterinary schools by Quacquarelli Symonds. This ranking is an indication of the high-quality work we do here, including our academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact.
At the CVM, we are lucky to have the support of the Texas A&M administration, which respects and values our work at he CVM. We recently received a visit from President Michael K. Young, in which we were able to demonstrate how the CVM serves every Texan every day. This visit was instrumental in introducing President Young to the importance of the work we are doing in the college.
The partnerships and collaborations we are building across the state and around the world are moving our college forward. In that same vein, the CVM faculty have received a number of accolades this past year, and it was an honor to recognize them for their accomplishments.
In a time when research funding is more difficult to come by, our faculty have done a spectacular job in securing funding. Since January, we have been awarded $27 million for research.
Our alumni have also been a great source of pride, their work and their efforts are continually supporting the CVM. One of many examples, the Class of ’65 has come together to establish a scholarship to help a new generation of students at the CVM.
The CVM recently welcomed, Department Heads Dr. John Levine of the Small Animal Hospital and Dr. Larry Suva of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology. Searches are underway for department heads in Veterinary Pathobiology and the Large Animal Hospital. We are also narrowing down the searches for a Hospital Director and a Director of One Health.
As many of you know, the CVM has recently been involved in a number construction projects. On Aug. 13, we opened the Avian Complex, which has enhanced our capabilities and positioned us as a leader in avian research. Construction is still in progress for the Multispecies Research Building set to open in January 2016 and the Veterinary and Biomedical Education Complex, set to open in June 2016.
The CVM has also continued its involvement in development and outreach. Recently, we held a development council meeting, a Small Animal Hospital Steering Committee meeting, and a BIMS Board meeting, which were attended by people who are passionate about the CVM and are looking to help. Additionally, a donor recognition ceremony was held at the Charles Hildebrand DVM ’56 Equine Complex, in which D. Wayne Lukas spoke. Other outreach the CVM has been involved in includes the Legislative Ladies meeting, and the trip to the Kentucky Derby.
Although it is impossible to mention all the CVM’s recent accomplishments and aspirations in a single newsletter, I hope that what I have communicated illustrates the CVM’s success and potential. The CVM family is what makes this college truly great, and together we can make our aspirations a reality.
