
Paula attended veterinary school at Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil, where she also completed a master’s in veterinary pathology studying toxic chronic liver disease. She then pursued a combined anatomic pathology residency and PhD at Texas A&M University. Her PhD research focused on bile acid metabolism and the gastrointestinal microbiota in dogs with chronic enteropathy.
As a board-certified anatomic pathologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the Gastrointestinal Laboratory, her efforts are primarily devoted to the diagnostic histopathology service focused on gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology of dogs and cats. Her goals include advancing specialized expertise in veterinary gastroenterology, supporting the training of future veterinarians and pathologists, and improving diagnostic accuracy. Her research focuses on advancing gastrointestinal pathology in veterinary species through collaborative studies and the integration of molecular diagnostics.
