Schubot Sponsors the Zoo, Exotics, Wildlife (ZEW) Club Annual ‘Wetlabs’
The Schubot Center was happy to again sponsor the ZEW Wetlab event in Feb 2025 that provides an intensive weekend full of hands-on learning opportunities with exotic animals and wildlife for veterinary students. The event hosted over 120 participants from the TAMU CVMBS as the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, and Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.
This year, the event hosted over 20 expert exotic animal specialists who shared their knowledge and skills, offering participants an unparalleled educational experience. Among the labs offered to participants, Dr. Sharman Hoppes led an avian handling lab at the Schubot aviary, where students learned physical exams of birds in a clinical setting. Additionally, Dr. Sarah Hamer, Dr. Meredith Anderson, and graduate students from Dr. Hamer’s lab led a wild mammal and bird capture lab at a local natural area. Students used live traps to capture rodents and medium-sized mammals and mist nets to capture wild birds. They calculated doses for chemical immobilization of animals and collected ticks and fleas from an opossum. Several wild birds were captured, allowing students to learn species and sex identification, check birds for ticks, observe blood sampling, place leg bands, and more.
We hope these vet students are now enriched with these new skills that they can carry forward in their careers’
