Just look at how big the wild Yellow-naped Amazon chicks we’re monitoring at Bosque Escondido have grown. The older ones are nearing fledgling age after spending around 65 days in the nest. This critically endangered parrot species faces threats from habitat loss and nest poaching. But thanks to the incredible efforts and protection provided by Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center- zoave, the population in Pilas de Canjel, Nicoya Peninsula, is thriving!
Huge congratulations to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center-zoave for decades of hard work paying off!
Our team has come back from the upper Tambopata River with fantastic news: Seven more chicks have fledged, including our first red-and-green macaw chick of the season! Plus, four more are almost ready to take flight!
If all goes as planned, we’ll have a total of 14 fledglings for the 2024 breeding season in Tambopata. A very good number for an “El Niño” year with a late nesting start. Despite the rainy expedition, our dedicated team managed to check over 20 active macaw nests successfully.
Huge congratulations to our fearless field leader, Carlos Carlim Huamani Callata, and our amazing field assistants Luis Rengifo and JesusEdgarCarrasco. Well done, team!!
Let’s celebrate! Our team at Bosque Escondido just discovered the FIRST macaw egg in one of our nest boxes!
In Tambopata, Peru, we’ve observed that it typically takes at least 2 breeding seasons to find eggs in new nests placed in a fresh area (with no other macaw nests around). Well, there it is—during the SECOND breeding season! Last breeding season, our nest boxes were being checked out, but this year, success! This is a monumental milestone for the Scarlet Macaw population from the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.
Thanks to Papa Johns Pizza Costa Rica and Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center- zoave for their support in this collaborative effort. Congratulations!!
Scarlet Macaw milestone in Bosque Escondido, Costa Rica: our second consecutive year with nesting reintroduced macaws! Our studies show that Scarlet Macaws usually start reproducing at around 6 years old in the wild. This reaffirms that they are not just surviving but thriving in the area.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement!
A heartfelt shoutout to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center- zoave for decades of dedication of hard work in the area!
Exciting News from Bosque Escondido!. The breeding season is here, and both parrots and humans are on a mission!. We’re checking nests to support the endangered Yellow-naped Amazon parrot. Let’s hope this pair successfully fledge chicks, giving a boost to the local bird population!.
Congratulations to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center- zoave for your conservation vision and a HUGE thanks for your support to allow us to work with these magnificent birds!
We just returned from a fruitful Upper Tambopata River expedition, where we found 14 wild macaw chicks and 12 eggs—a highly productive breeding season!
Special thanks to the dedicated team: Carlos Huamani, Roshan Tailor, Antenor Hurtado Carmona and Luis Rengifo for their outstanding work in camping, climbing trees and chick inspections.
Excellent team work!
Join us in congratulating our Tambopata field leader, Carlos Carlim Huamani Callata !
Carlos was hired by BBC to help film “The Forest” episode for #PlanetEarthIII by BBC One. The episode explores the role of giant trees in the Amazon rainforest ecosystem. Carlos was filmed showcasing his expertise as a tree climber in our beloved Tambopata. He even appears on screen with narration by Sir David Attenborough!
Congratulations, Carlos! The entire The Macaw Society team is proud of your achievement!
The “Forests” episode of Planet Earth III is now streaming on AMC+ in the US, on BBC iPlayer in the UK and in Spain on Movistar+
For the first time ever, we’ve captured a Spider Monkey harassing a family of Scarlet Macaws on video!
There’s no evidence that Spider Monkeys are predators of macaws, so we’re puzzled about the monkey’s motives. However, these brave reintroduced macaws at Bosque Escondido, Costa Rica, seem more than ready to stand their ground and protect their chick. The fledgling (in the middle) can fly, so it’s a mystery why the family of macaws didn’t just take off from the pesky monkey.
Always learning in nature!

Macaws are gearing up for the next breeding season at Bosque Escondido. The reintroduced Scarlet Macaw population is busy inspecting nests, including the nest boxes that we along with Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center- zoave helped install back in 2022. Fingers crossed they find them cozy and decide to make them their homes!
