Recently released Yellow-naped Amazon parrot spotted eating wild foods in Bosque Escondido, Costa Rica

Exciting update from the field. The Yellow-nape Amazon parrot #53, released last November, has been thriving in the wild despite the unusual rainy conditions during its release.

A few days ago, we spotted this parrot happily munching on flowers of Huevos de Caballo (Tabernaemontana donnell-smithii), demonstrating its adaptation and success in learning how to be a wild parrot once again.

Thanks to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center for leading conservation efforts to ensure the long-term survival of these incredible birds!

A quick sneak peek to our wild macaw chicks from Punta Leona, Costa Rica

Wild Macaw chicks from Punta Leona Hotel are getting bigger and full of personality!! They normally fledge around 90 days, so they still have around one more month in the nest, but they are definitely getting ready for some action!!

Look at that little one getting upset with us when we come to check their nest!

Wild macaw chicks from our nest GUANACASTE were definitely not happy about their next health checkup.

We’re thrilled to announce the first confirmed Scarlet Macaw chick in Bosque Escondido!

A pair of reintroduced macaws are first-time nesting in a dead palm trunk, and this is the first known chick hatched in this population. This is a huge milestone for this wildlife reintroduction effort and a testament to the success of this conservation work.

BIG thanks to Don Miguel Gonzáles (manager at Bosque Escondido) for such an extraordinary discovery.

Group of released Yellow-naped Parrots spotted foraging on wild foods at Bosque Escondido

Exciting news from Bosque Escondido, Costa Rica!

Just a few weeks after their release, FOUR Yellow-naped parrots have been spotted foraging on the seeds of a Guanacaste Blanco (Albizia neopoides) on the trails near their pre-release cages.

These parrots are now eating wild foods and making parrot calls as they learn how to thrive in their natural habitat. It’s a fantastic sight to see them becoming wild parrots once again! 🙌🏼🦜

Newest addition to the family in Punta Leona, Costa Rica

We have some incredible news! Last week, we stumbled upon a brand-new macaw nest in Hotel Punta Leona Costa Rica, and we were happily surprised when we discovered a 25-day-old macaw chick inside!

Our team inspected the nest and confirmed that the little one is in great health and thriving under the care of its parents. We can’t wait to watch this little macaw grow and see it take its first flight. Stay tuned for more updates on our newest addition to the family!

What do birds do during an earthquake?

Usually not an easy question to answer as we are rarely watching closely just as the earthquake hits. But the other night a magnitude 5.3 quake hit Hotel Punta Leona Costa Rica at 7:44 PM, when the nest cams were running, so we have it on video!

Despite the fact that nobody was injured, the adult macaws in all six of our nests reacted quickly and strongly. Immediately before the quake all were asleep or resting in the bottom of the nest. But within only 3 seconds after feeling the quake, two adults had flown out of the nest and the remaining adults were all sitting in the nest entrance ready to fly!

We suspect that there is a strong survival advantage for cavity nesting birds to get out quick if they think their tree is about to fall, but rarely do we get to witness such a strong and synchronized reaction. This time we got lucky!

Check out these amazing videos that show the exact moment when an earthquake struck and the incredible reactions of the macaws. It’s a mesmerizing sight that you won’t want to miss!

As the ground begins to shake and the world around them becomes unsteady, the macaws’ instincts kick in, and they react quickly and strongly trying to make sense of the unexpected chaos.

Nest boxes visitors in Bosque Escondido Costa Rica

The breeding season in Bosque Escondido has finally kicked off. It is the first breeding season that the nest boxes have been up, and they are definitely attracting attention. Even before the breeding season started, it was the iguanas and the kinkajous, but now the birds have moved in. We have seen Yellow-naped parrots in the entrance of 2 nest boxes, and several owls are nesting as well.

The Scarlet macaws are not using our artificial nest boxes yet, but they are nesting in two natural cavities in the area. Our data from Tambopata showed that it takes from 2 to 3 breeding seasons for a new nest box to be occupied by Scarlet Macaws. So, maybe next year they will use them.

We have found 2 nest boxes with Mottled owls (Megascops cooperi) nesting in them with a total of 5 confirmed eggs. When the chicks hatch, we will collect some photographic information from them.  However, not all is happiness in paradise… 1 of our nest boxes had a Pacific screech owl in it with 1 egg, but soon after the nest was invaded by bees and the pacific screech owl was evicted. Such is life in the jungle, or as they say in Costa Rica: Pura vida.
