You should extern at as many practices as you can. While there, observe and absorb from doctors and staff. A good tech will show you ways to save time and make your days easier. Watch how other doctors work and ask yourself, “is this who I want to be?” Are they always late or do they find ways to be on time? Do they typically complain or make the best out of an unfavorable situation? Can they lead or need to be lead? Find yourself a well-balanced team to make your first 4 years as an associate fun and a team that you want to learn from.
Almost every practice has the same toys and gadgets. We all provide similar work-life balance, so start looking for the intangibles that compliment your personality.
