Howdy from Firehouse and Goodheart! We are a group of full-service small animal general practices offering high-quality medicine and exceptional client service. We’re always excited to meet the next group of Aggie veterinarians, and we want to invite you to learn more about externships and other opportunities at our hospitals. Hosting students who are eager to learn allows us to contribute to our profession and is also a great way to keep our own knowledge and skills fresh and sharp.
We are looking for veterinary students who want to gain experience in a high-quality small animal practice, have a positive outlook and love connecting with clients (even if it still makes you nervous), and are ready to jump in and grab opportunities to learn as they come your way. Our externship program is open to vet students in any stage of their education, and we host externs year-round for 2 weeks per student.
Our Veterinary Externship Program relies on student-driven learning to improve your clinical skills and, for those who are interested, your business acumen as well. In addition to shadowing our doctors during appointments and assisting with surgeries, we may ask you to research a medical topic and present to our team or join us at a community event to connect with new clients.
We trust your school to prepare you for the NAVLE. We want to help prepare you to be a happy, productive practitioner of veterinary medicine and an important member of your community. We also enjoy helping students with their own extracurricular goals, such as completing your VBMA Honors Portfolio.
We are also proud to support student-led organizations whose missions we share and have met many of our favorite externs through our work with VBMA and PrideSVMC.

We are in Austin, Texas and Denver, Colorado! We currently have seven hospitals in the Austin area and three in Denver. Each of our locations has something unique to offer.
